PARIS — More than 200 government representatives from over 70 countries will join together Feb. 24-25 for the Second Ministerial Preparatory Committee meeting (PrepCom II) with civil society representatives and international organizations, according to a press release.
PrepCom II, in preparation for the Seventh World Water Forum, will discuss political priorities and progress toward “Water for our Future” and establish the foundations for the forum’s “Ministerial Statement,” stated the release.
Lead by the Republic of Korea, the host country of the Seventh World Water Forum, and the World Water Council, this process is “considered to be one of the most important political efforts dedicated to water,” and the draft Ministerial Statement, based on contributions received from the forum’s 16 themes and a discussion paper put together during PrepCom I, will continue to be discussed during PrepCom II hosted at UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) headquarters, reported the release.
“Water is going to be one of the most important — if not the most important — issue of the 21st century,” said Andras Szollosi-Nagy, co-chair of the Political Process Commission, World Water Council. “Humanity has a huge task ahead. The forum is an amazing and [perfect] agora offering the opportunity to discuss political issues related to water. We have identified the problems, we [now have] the solutions; the question is how we implement it, and that would be the outcome of Daegu. It’s not about money, it’s about politics.”
