WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — The American Public Works Association (APWA) selected Carollo Engineers as the winner of the Public Works Project of the Year for small cities/rural communities, according to a press release.
Carollo Engineer’s project, the West Sacramento Bridge District Water Storage and Park Project, was recognized for its innovative approach to structures, which includes parks, municipal facilities and more, stated the release.
Located along the banks of the Sacramento River, the city of Sacramento’s “Bridge District” represents “an important future source of economic stimulus and redevelopment opportunities,” continued the release.
A new potable water reservoir and a pump station were needed to support the district’s planned development, added the release, but a lack of available land required an aboveground tank.
A site was selected that was previously identified for a neighborhood park, and the city made the decision to integrate the tank and pump station into the center of the park to celebrate the infrastructure and utilize it as a theme to indicate the connection between water and the community, reported the release.
“We are honored to be recognized with this prestigious award from the American Public Works Association,” said Carollo Engineers Project Manager Chris Cleveland. “Inspired by the city’s approach to the project, we were able to celebrate the value of water infrastructure, utilize the continuous public outreach opportunity created by the project and hopefully inspire other utilities looking to convey the value of water to their communities.”
Established in 2013, the award recognizes agencies from counties or cities with less than 75,000 people, noted the release, and aims to promote excellence in demonstrating ingenuity, creativity and efficiency in the delivery of public works projects that have “profoundly impacted the communities in which they reside.”
