SUNNYVALE, Calif. — The city of Sacramento Department of Utilities operates around 1,600 miles of water pipeline with more than 135,000 service connections and two water treatment plants.

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Badger Meter and Trimble announced that the city of Sacramento Department of Utilities (DOU) has streamlined installations and achieved substantial savings on its citywide Badger Meter Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) deployment project with the adoption of the Trimble® Unity solution, according to a press release.

The initial rollout of the solution streamlined the Badger Meter deployment and produced a return on investment (ROI) in three months, and full deployment is forecast to enable the DOU to achieve around $1.6 million in savings over the five-year meter deployment project, stated the release.

The DOU operates around 1,600 miles of water pipeline with more than 135,000 service connections and two water treatment plants, reported the release, and metered service totals approximately 58 percent of Sacramento.

A multiyear Water Meter Reading Automation (WMRA) program is currently being conducted by the DOU to provide “100 percent metered service with an AMI meter endpoint,” continued the release, and at the program’s completion, the system will include 140,000 endpoints (currently about 25,000 are installed).

The program’s completion date has been recently accelerated to 2020 from 2025 because of conservation concerns, noted the release.
