EPA announces Superfund site sampling results

ATLANTA — EPA conducted indoor and outdoor air, sub-slab oil gas and groundwater samples.

ATLANTA — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced results from vapor intrusion sampling it conducted at the Macon Naval Ordnance Plant Superfund site in Macon, according to a press release.

The Freudenberg Texbond Facility, located down gradient of the Navy’s former wastewater treatment plant, was the site of the sampling, noted the release. The tests were conducted the week of Feb. 23.

EPA conducted indoor and outdoor air, sub-slab oil gas and groundwater samples over a 24-hour period, stated the release. Thirteen of 14 indoor air samples only showed trace detections of various volatile organic compounds.

Sampling detected TCE levels of 230 micrograms per cubic meter of air (µg/m3), exceeding EPA’s levels of concern of 9-27 µg/m3 for a commercial use, shared the release.

Freudenberg Texbond took steps to limit worker exposures by increasing the air exchange rate in the breakroom, reported the release. Follow-up samples indicated acceptable risk levels.

EPA’s Trace Atmospheric Gas Analyzer (TAGA) mobile lab will be utilized to conduct additional air sampling, noted the release.
