NEW YORK — The 30-member group of locally elected and appointed officials counsels the EPA on key environmental policies.

NEW YORK — Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer will serve on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Local Government Advisory Committee, according to a press release.

The 30-member committee of locally elected and appointed officials counsels the EPA on key environmental policies, noted the release. The goal is to foster partnerships between the EPA and local governments to achieve positive environmental benefits.

"Mayor Dawn Zimmer was selected because of her strong track record on environmental protection, and particularly her efforts to make Hoboken a more sustainable city," said Judith A. Enck, EPA regional administrator, in the release. "Her commitment to making Hoboken a healthy and resilient community serves as an example for communities across the country. EPA is grateful to have her input on a range of issues we tackle."

Zimmer led Hoboken during Hurricane Sandy, reported the release. The city now has a comprehensive resilience plan to help it prepare for flooding from future storms. New Jersey also selected Hoboken as one of three cities to showcase a green infrastructure project.

“As mayor of a city on the front lines of climate change, it is an honor to serve on the EPA’s Local Government Advisory Committee,” shared Zimmer in the release. “I hope that sharing our experiences and lessons as an urban coastal community that is adapting to the dual threat of rising seas and stronger storms will help lead to solutions to some of our greatest environmental challenges.”

The committee often advises the EPA on air and water quality, waste management and coastal restoration, noted the release. Members can serve up to two terms, which last two years each.
