Gains forecasted for water treatment equipment market

March 12, 2018

Market report highlights for: water filtration equipment; water treatment chemicals; industrial sludge treatment chemicals; and membrane bioreactor systems.

Water filtration study reports market gains due to regulations and improving standards

The Freedonia Group published its “Global Water Filtration Equipment Markets” study in November 2017. Key findings include:

Increased emphasis on wastewater treatment and reuse: Wastewater management practices will continue to be priorities in developing and developed markets in response to environmental concerns and water shortages. In manufacturing and other industrial applications, potential water shortages and the regulatory burden of treating wastewater for disposal has prompted users to increase their rates of wastewater recycling and reuse. This often requires aggressive treatment, usually with sophisticated technologies such as membrane systems.

Membrane demand will be supported by increasing water purity standards: Process and supply water quality is increasingly emphasized as an important component in manufacturing processes, as it can have a direct impact on final product quality. Users in the U.S., Western Europe and other developed markets are increasingly eschewing water treatment chemicals in favor of membranes and other filtration solutions. Maintaining high levels of finished product quality also helps producers compete with low-cost imports from burgeoning manufacturing industries in developing regions.

Expanding infrastructure will support gains in filtration equipment: Growth will reflect upgrades to aging or inadequate water treatment systems in developed markets and investment in new infrastructure in industrializing regions. New desalination capacity in water-scarce areas such as the Middle East, parts of the U.S., Australia and southern Europe will also support further gains.

Water treatment chemicals and technology market projected to reach $202.8B by 2024

Per Esticast Research and Consulting’s report “Water Treatment Chemicals and Technology Market” by product type — pumping system, chemicals (coagulants and flocculants, activated carbon, biocides), and membrane systems (reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, microfiltration) — and industry trends, estimation and forecast for 2016 to 2024, the global water treatment chemicals and technology market was valued at $147 billion in 2016 and is projected to reach $202.8 billion by 2024, growing at a CAGR of 4.2 percent from 2017 to 2024.

The pumping system market generated a revenue of nearly $105.5 billion in 2016 and is expected to dominate the market for the entire forecast period because the focus on energy efficiency offers a considerable potential for growth. Moreover, environmental compliance with increasingly stringent regulations has a significant impact on the market. However, the membrane system market is expected to grow at the highest CAGR of 9.1 percent during the forecast period because of increasing use of microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes in industrial wastewater treatment plants.

The valves and controls segment generated a revenue of $60 billion in 2016. Different valves serve different functions and are specified for installation depending upon the volume, environment and purity requirements for the water. The market segment held nearly 57 percent of the global market share in 2016 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.1 percent during the forecast period. Environmental legislations play a key role in determining the market’s performance and future growth.

Industrial sludge treatment chemicals market to reach $7.5B by 2024

According to a new research report “Industrial Sludge Treatment Chemicals Market" by Global Market Insights Inc., the market is expected to exceed $7.5 billion by 2024 due to growing industrialization and an increase in manufacturing and chemical industries, which lead to waste and sludge generation.

In the industrial sludge treatment chemicals market, activated sludge held a maximum portion in 2016 and will exhibit growth to attain more than a 45-percent share by 2024. The primary sludge segment will rise at a significant CAGR from 2017 to 2024 to surpass $1.5 billion by the end of the forecast period. Process chemicals are segmented as disinfectants, coagulants and flocculants. Coagulants will grow at a moderate rate to surpass $2.5 billion by the end of the forecast time span. The flocculants segment will exhibit growth at a CAGR of more than 6 percent to capture the highest industrial sludge treatment chemicals market share by 2024. Conditioning and stabilization processes segment will display growth at a maximum CAGR in the forecast period and is expected to be valued close to $3 billion by 2024. Dewatering and drying treatments segment is expected to grow with a CAGR of more than 6 percent in the forecast time span to capture close to 30 percent of the industrial sludge treatment chemicals market share in 2024.

The food and beverage industry is one of the major end users of the industrial sludge treatment chemicals market and is likely to generate close to $1.5 billion by 2024. Chemicals and personal care segment will grow with a fastest CAGR in the forecast period. The disposal of sludge as fertilizer, which is useful to agricultural production, will also further boost the industrial sludge treatment chemicals market demand in the coming years.

Membrane bioreactor systems market expected to reach $5.59B by 2026

Market report published by Credence Research Inc. "Membrane Bioreactor Systems Market Growth, Future Prospects, and Competitive Analysis, 2018 -2026," the membrane bioreactor systems market was valued at $1.54 billion in 2017 and is expected to reach $5.59 billion by 2026, expanding at a CAGR of 15.46 percent from 2018 to 2026.

Key market movements include:

  • The rise in industrial sludge effluents has led to the increase in need for wastewater treatment across the globe, thus leading to a rise in demand for membrane bioreactor (MBR) systems.
  • In comparison to the conventional activated sludge system, the MBR system has shown to be more cost-efficient and  advantageous with factors such as minimal sludge formation, smaller footprint, better effluent quality, ease in operation and less influence from bulk sludge. These factors drive the MBR systems market, providing lucrative growth in the current and forecast period.
  • Water shortage increases the need for optimum use of water and thus promotes wastewater treatment.
  • There has been a rise in the need for treating industrial wastewater. Government regulations are being implemented for accurate industrial wastewater disposals, which also has contributed to the rise in demand for MBR systems in the current and forecast period.
