TROY, N.Y. — A new U.S. Geological Survey study has found high levels of methane gas in some upstate New York state water wells, according to an article by The Republic.
The study found that 15 percent of groundwater samples from 66 household wells across south-central New York contain methane levels high enough to necessitate remediation, the article reported.

According to the article, these wells were not near oil and gas drilling, a common methane contamination cause.

Higher levels of methane were found in wells located in valleys during the testing done in summer 2012 in parts of Broome, Tioga, Chemung, Chenango and Delaware counties, the article noted.
