The EPA awarded $900,000 to four companies for development and commercialization of nanomaterials and environmentally clean technologies through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. Among recipients is Intelligent Optical Systems Inc., of Torrance, CA, which will adapt immunoassays – highly sensitive biological laboratory tests – to develop field monitors that test for organic pollutants in water supplies and food processing.

The overview of the $400 billion global industry focuses on development of chemicals and materials in terms of market value and how they serve end-user markets.
