Industrial Waterworld Poised to Grow With Recovering Economy

I would like to introduce myself as the new editor of Industrial WaterWorld and online editor for PennWell's Water Group web site and e-mail newsletter. I'll also be active in the program committee of the Industrial Water Conference, Industrial WaterWorld's growing annual event for professionals in the process water, cooling water and industrial wastewater industries. It's a pleasure to return to the Water Group; just a few years ago, I was an Associate Editor for WaterWorld magazine.

My new position comes at an important time for Industrial WaterWorld. The magazine has done well through a difficult economic downturn which affected all businesses in this country; now it's poised for a surge forward as the economy recovers this year.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently placed national effluent limitations on facilities that discharge wastewater from slaughtering, rendering and other processes such as cleaning, cutting and smoking meat and poultry. EPA estimates compliance costs of $58 million per year.

The agency also recently finalized its 316(b) Phase II rules for cooling water intake structures at power generation facilities. This rule is estimated to affect about 550 facilities and to cost large power plants about $400 million annually.

These regulatory changes are just a few of the changes businesses will deal with this year. The ultimate goal is to comply with the new environmental guidelines as efficiently and economically as possible.

It will have a products section, a services section and a listing by company name. We've begun a large readership study to find out what you expect to find in the pages of your copy of Industrial WaterWorld and we intend to deliver on your requests.

So far, the response has been extremely helpful: the readers who participated in the survey told us that they wanted to see more products and services information about process systems and control; filtration; pumps, valves and related products; wastewater treatment and water treatment. Readers have also voiced a preference for more case studies and project news, divided by industry. As we move into this phase of growth and development, these reader responses will be our road map.
