UV disinfection

Xylem, formerly ITT Water & Wastewater, has announced advanced features to its WEDECO Spektron ultraviolet (UV) light disinfection product range. The upgrades to the closed vessel UV reactors are aimed at the municipal drinking water market for flows of a few cubic meters per hour to more than 1,000 m³/h. The new units will be equipped with the company’s latest Ecoray UV lamp and ballast technology. In combination with the option of variable power output control, they feature excellent energy efficiency under all operating conditions. While in dim mode, the lamps realize energy savings of up to 20 percent of the energy and use up to 80 percent less mercury than the previous lamp generation. WEDECO, a Xylem brand, www.wedeco.com

Water, steam systems guide

ISPE is planning to release ISPE Baseline® Guide Volume 4: Water and Steam Systems (Second Edition). The second edition has been completely revised to address changes in industry practices and global regulations over the past decade. Additionally, this comprehensive, industry-driven document will promote consistent and practical interpretation of regulatory requirements for water and steam systems worldwide. The guide aims to assist with the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of new water and steam systems that meet current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) and comply with existing regulations and related guidance. International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering, www.ispe.org

Hybrid DI system

Pentair has introduced a new Hybrid Deionization (Hybrid DI) system with the company’s CrossCharge technology, the first electronic water purification system that is practical for residential and light commercial applications. It offers consumers the benefits of a reverse osmosis (RO) system and those of a water softener without requiring salt. The new technology uses capacitive electrodes to remove hardness and purify water. The core of the system is Voltea’s patented “stack” configuration of electrodes combined with ion-selective membranes. An advanced micro-controller uses an array of sensors to monitor and manage all system and water quality parameters in real time. Pentair Inc., www.pentair.com

Check valves

Asahi/America has introduced 10” and 12” PVC wafer check valves. The valves can be installed on the discharge side of pumps to prevent back-flow. The check valve’s body, disc and stopper assembly are machined from solid PVC plate stock, which conforms to ASTM D1784 Cell Classification 12454A. This material was selected based on its chemical resistance and mechanical properties. The valves conform to ISO 5752 face-to-face dimensions and can be installed by slip-fitting the valve between two mating flanges. The valve body automatically centers on the mating flanges, once the stud pack is installed. Asahi/America Inc., www.asahi-america.com

Portable water reclaim system

Mi-T-M has added a Portable Water Reclaim system to its line of water treatment equipment. The PWR Series allows wash water to be reclaimed on the jobsite. A 20-foot water berm is used to direct water to a vacuum head and into a holding chamber where it goes through a filtering process and sends it to a holding tank for reuse or proper disposal. Options include a wheel kit for added portability, a cyclone filter to clean waste water to 70 microns, and a bag filter which can filter as low as 5 microns. Mi-T-M Corp.,www.mitm.com

Sanitizing system

APV FX SafeWater from SPX is suited for sanitation and CIP cleansing procedures in food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical industries. The system produces Hypochlorous acid (HOCL), which is a weak acid and a powerful sanitizer and cleaning agent that is substantially more effective than hypochlorite. It sanitizes process equipment rapidly and effectively without the need for heating, which substantially lowers safety risks during handling. The APV FX generator (plate configuration), a proprietary licensed technology, also produces large amounts of “ready-to-use” caustic electrolyte that is a highly efficient cleaning agent. Non-clog pumps

Xylem, which recently spun off from ITT Corp., has introduced a new range of Godwin portable pumps featuring non-clog Flygt N-technology. The new range, called the Godwin NC Series, is engineered to deliver clog-free pumping in sewage bypass and wastewater applications. The design allows pass through of stringy solids without clogging, and has been used successfully in Flygt dry installed and submersible pumps since 1997. The product has been proven in more than 300,000 water and wastewater installations around the world. Godwin, a Xylem brand, www.godwinpumps.com

Geomembrane

Reinforced Polypropylene Geomembrane manufactured by Firestone Specialty Products can be used in a variety of municipal drinking, wastewater and industrial applications. With a density between .92 and .94, the geomembrane is ideal in lining applications, as a floating cover or for gas capture and/or odor control. Designed with exceptional tensile strength, as well as chemical and environmental exposure resistance, the thermoplastic geomembranes protect against punctures and remain unaffected by UV, ozone and soil bacteria. It is available in 36, 45 and 60 mil gauges and a variety of colors and panel sizes. Firestone Specialty Products,www.firestonesp.com/wwpf1

Trace metal removal

Siemens has introduced a new specialty media that removes regulated metals from industrial wastewater, groundwater and storm runoff water. The SCU™ Trace Metal Removal Media removes trace levels of metals such as copper, zinc, lead, mercury, cadmium, trivalent chromium, nickel and others. The media can achieve levels below one ppb for most metals at flow rates up to 5,000 gpm. For mercury, the media can achieve levels below 12 parts per trillion (ppt), which meet the current U.S. targets for discharge into the environment. Depending on customers’ needs, Siemens offers both short-term emergency and long-term permanent SCU™ media systems. Siemens, www.water.siemens.com

Biogas energy system

Anaergia has introduced a new system to generate biogas energy at wastewater treatment facilities using advanced anaerobic digestion technologies. Pump monitoring switch

The FlexSwitch® FLT93 Pump Protection Flow Switch from Fluid Components International (FCI) can reduce pump repair and extend pump life by detecting dry running conditions caused by irregular liquid flows or slurries. The switch monitors the flow, level and temperature of liquids. It is ideal for pump wet/dry detection, where unexpected reductions in media flow rates may leave pumps vulnerable to over-heating conditions that can result in bearing or seal damage.
