ABB Instrumentation has cut the cost of installing orifice-plate flowmeters by up to half with the launch of its OriMaster compact orifice DP flowmeter, the latest in its new FlowMaster range. This one-piece flowmeter is suitable for clean liquids, gases and steam applications in line sizes from 1-8” (DN25 to DN200) and pressures up to 1450 psi (100 bar). Combining all major components for an orifice plate installation in one assembly eliminates need for users to source and install a separate manifold, transmitter and impulse piping – and allows for 80% fewer leak points, greatly reducing fugitive emissions as well as metering errors caused by such leakage. Engineered Software, which works in conjunction with pipe manufacturers and users, has added to its Pipe Tables used in the PIPE-FLO®, PUMP-FLO™ and Flow of Fluids piping system design software. The new table is for Cross linked Polyethylene (PEX) SDR9 Tubing, an alternative to copper piping due to its durability, flexibility, lower cost and ease of installation. This follows recent approval for PEX tubing for use in water distribution systems into the California Plumbing Code. Engineered Software Inc., Lacey, WA, 360-412-0702, www.eng-software.com

Process shower system

Process shower systems in wastewater treatment or other industrial applications become ineffective when contaminated water or dissolved minerals clog the spray nozzles, forcing operators to clean the piping and nozzles. If the shower bar has an internal cleaning brush, operators have to periodically turn the brush to keep nozzles flowing freely. The AutoRotator from Appleton Manufacturing solves this by automatically cleaning shower pipe and nozzles without operator intervention. They’re scrubbed clean after each valve opening. Appleton Mfg. Division, Neenah, WI, 800-531-2002 www.appletonmfg.com/autorotator.php

Stub end holders

McElroy recently introduced a new Stub End Holder that firmly holds stub end fittings in place during the thermoplastic pipe fusion process. They’re designed for 8”, 12” and 18” jaws or inserts. Each unit features a single adjustment point that adjusts all four jaws of the stub end holder simultaneously, while automatically self-centering to ensure it’s held concentric to the pipe. Between the three new holder models, all weighing less than 30 lbs, operators will be able to clamp fittings with outer diameters between 2.37” (60mm) and 21.27” (540mm). Piping & instru1mentation diagrams

Autodesk began shipping its AutoCAD P&ID 2010 software, the new release of its software application built specifically for creating, modifying, and managing piping and instrumentation diagrams, in late April. Built on the AutoCAD 2010 platform, AutoCAD P&ID is familiar and easier to use, allowing design and engineering teams to start working with minimal training. Common tasks are more streamlined and automated to help boost productivity, while designers have easier access to more accurate component and line information. Call about scheduled webinars. Among custom design services provided by PT&P, the company recently provided 78 Figure 2000 heavy duty pipe saddles for two 24” insulated ductile iron pipelines. The two pipelines are routed beneath a 650’ bridge crossing over a river in upper New York State. The insulation is 3” thick with high density polyethylene jacketing. Axial movements due to expansion can approach 3”. For the jacketing to avoid being damaged when displacements occur, the saddles are lined with polished stainless steel. Additional tools at PT&P’s website include information on field services, unit converters, stress analysis, product testing, spring sizing programs and vendor CAD worksheets. The newest addition to the seismic line from TOLCO, a unit of NIBCO Inc., the mechanical “Fast Clamp” attachment offers 12” of overall adjustment, allowing a rough-in style installation and taking the guess work out of cut lengths. A yoke design provides for easy installation to multiple hanger rod sizes, allowing distributors to reduce the number of SKUs they carry. The designer/installer also benefits as fewer attachment types are necessary for any particular job. The clamp is available in two options. The Figure 985 fits either trapeze-style hangers or single pipe hangers and is available in two sizes: 1) 3/8”-5/8” hanger rod size and 2) ¾”-7/8” hanger rod size. The Figure 986 comes in a standard ½” rod size (consult factory for other sizes), and is designed to be the upper or structural attachment. TOLCO Inc., Corona, CA, 800-786-5266, www.tolco.com

CIP conductivity measurement

The industry’s first four-electrode sensor that performs the full range of conductivity measurements in sanitary applications, Rosemount Analytical Model 410VP includes a quick disconnect Variopol fitting as standard, making removing it from process piping easy. This single sensor replaces a need for two – one to measure high-conductivity cleaning solution and one to measure low-conductivity rinse water – saving money and reducing maintenance and space requirements. It’s the latest in the PUR-Sense family of sensors developed for the life sciences and food and beverage industries. A wide dynamic range of the sensor (1 µS/cm to 1400 mS/cm), makes it ideal for clean-in-place (CIP) monitoring.
