POWER-GEN International, one of the largest power industry conferences and exhibitions in the country, will be held this year on Dec. 9-11 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., and will provide a wide range of valuable offerings covering every aspect of the power generation sector.

The event is expected to bring together more than 22,000 power professionals and other industry leaders from over 90 countries to exhibit their latest products, network with other experts, discover new trends and solutions, and experience a wealth of useful information. Further, over 1,400 exhibitors are set to display and demonstrate their many state-of-the-art services across the expansive show floor.

This year's POWER-GEN will comprise over 70 technical sessions, more than 30 pre-conference workshops, six local technical tours, multiple panel discussions and networking events, roughly 300 speakers and presenters, and over 30 professional development educational courses broken up into 4-, 8- and 16-hour classes.

Some of the water-related sessions will cover, for example, the improvement of plant performance with today's compliance challenges; cooling water intake regulations, compliance control strategies and technologies; and effluent limitation guidelines and zero liquid discharge options for treating power plant wastewater.

Other sessions of interest to industrial water professionals will discuss the operation and maintenance of reverse osmosis and deionization systems; operation, maintenance and problem resolution of water softeners and filters; and inspection, troubleshooting and maintenance of combined-cycle heat recovery steam generators, to name a few.

The exhibit floor will also showcase a number of water-related systems and technologies specific to the power industry, including pumps and compressors; cooling supplies and services; boilers, heat exchangers and combustion systems; inspection and testing materials; software and analysis tools; and filter and filtration equipment.

The opening keynote session will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 9, with Russell Ray, chief editor of Power Engineering magazine and POWER-GEN International program committee chair, providing the welcome address. Other featured speakers will include Eric Silagy, CEO of Florida Power & Light Company; Mauricio Gutierrez, executive VP and CEO of NRG Energy; Kimberly S. Greene, executive VP and CEO of Southern Company; and David Walsh, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Americas, Inc.

Here is a sneak peek at some of the products and services that will be on display at POWER-GEN.

Expansion joints

The Proco Series 260R molded wide-arch expansion joints are specifically designed for use with plastic or FRP piping systems. An option for the standard spool-type expansion joints, the Proco Style 261R & 262R have lower spring forces to compress, extend or laterally offset. These expansion joints can be used on plastic or FRP pipes, pumps, valves and tanks without concern of the joint being stronger than the piping unit they are being installed in.

Media filter

The Schreiber Fuzzy Filter is a high-rate, compressible media filter used for various industrial water and wastewater treatment streams. Through media compression, pore size is adjustable down to 4 microns. Footprint is minimal because of operation at flux rates of up to 44 gpm/ft2. Industrial applications include stormwater, membrane reject water, boiler feedwater, raw river water, cooling water, and wastewater. Vigorous air scouring of the uncompressed media bed, while backwashing with influent (no clean water used), cleans the media. After the wash cycle is complete, media is returned to its compressed state and filtration is resumed.

Industrial valve

The InsertValve from Team Industrial Services installs under pressure, reducing the need for production shutdown or loss of product. The valve can be installed in an emergency situation or a planned event. Designed for a wide range of pipe sizes and types, the InsertValve's gate wedge rests on the valve body rather than the host pipe. This unique feature insures a quality seat and facilitates downstream pipe replacement. Team offers professional installation services by certified technicians or packaged tapping/insertion equipment ready for owner use.
