Lanxess halts U.S. ion exchange production, expands Indian facility
Bayer-spinoff Lanxess AG announced will cease production of ion exchange resins and related products at its U.S. subsidiary Lanxess Sybron Chemicals Inc. in Birmingham, NJ, effective May 2 for a loss of about 90 jobs. The company plans to meet customers’ needs with ion exchange production sites in Leverkusen and Bitterfeld, Germany, and a planned new facility in the state of Gujarat, India. The NJ facility will continue to serve NAFTA customers as a sales, technical service, laboratory, and warehousing facility for the LEWATIT® and IONAC® resins. It also announced a EUR 50 million expansion at its Jhagadia, India, facility, where rubber chemicals production is being relocated from Thane, India. Start-up of the facility will coincide with launch of a new ion exchange plant at the same spot to supply products for generation of ultra-pure water for the semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries and for industrial water treatment. Both moves will make it Lanxess’ largest facility in India. The Ion Exchange Resins and Rubber Chemicals business units belong to the Performance Chemicals segment. It achieved sales of EUR 1.514 billion between January and September 2007.
Ecovation, Breyers Yogurt receive environmental award
Ecovation received a 2007 Environmental Excellence Award from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) for its dairy waste stream management solution for Breyers Yogurt Co., North Lawrence Dairy. Both companies were recognized for a system that treats dairy plant waste in an innovative biogas recovery system to offset energy costs. In other news, Ecovation expands on a licensing agreement with purchase of anaerobic treatment technologies of Waterleau unit Biotim targeted at breweries, pulp & paper and other high waste flow industries.
IWC issues call for papers
With attendance at the 2007 event up 10% over 2005 – the last time it was held in Orlando – and up 25% from 2006, organizers of the International Water Conference announced a call for papers for the 69th annual event, which will take place for the first time in San Antonio, TX, on Oct. 26-28. “The 2008 IWC will expand its resources to address refinery wastewater treatment issue, encouraging personnel in the area and nationally to find a niche at this conference for future participation,” said Bechtel’s Kumar Sinha, event general chairperson. Flowserve wins honors for facilities
Pump and flow control specialist Flowserve Corp. was chosen by automation professionals as a 2007 Readers’ Choice Award winner in the January 2008 issue of Control magazine in the category for electric valve actuation. Flowserve, which has won the award for five consecutive years, produces the Limitorque brand of electric actuators. The company also was recognized by the Carroll County (Md.) Department of Economic Development with its Business Expansion Award for Flowserve’s Motor Center of Excellence (MCOE) expansion project in Taneytown, MD. Maryland Secretary of Business & Economic Development David Edgerly presented the award at a recent Business Awards Dinner.

Pilgrim’s Pride earns GE ecomagination award
Pilgrim’s Pride Corp., the largest U.S. chicken company, received a 2008 ecomagination leadership award from GE Water & Process Technologies, for achieving reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, waste solids, and water usage at its El Dorado, AR, facility. Presented at a general meeting of Pilgrim’s Pride executives in Atlanta in January, the ecomagination award honors the company for achieving nearly $500,000 in annual operational savings and numerous environmental benefits. In other news, GE Water announced a $8.9 million investment to expand its advanced water and process manufacturing facility located in Wuxi, China.
