EPA asking company to prove injecting oil and gas wastewater won’t pollute aquifer

CASPER, Wyo. — The EPA also wants to know that the water won’t be used for drinking water.

CASPER, Wyo. — A company in Wyoming planning on injection oil and gas well wastewater into an aquifer is being asked by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to prove it won’t pollute the aquifer, according to the Billings Gazette.

The state’s environmental agency and some oil and gas industry regulators are also concerned about the possible pollution from the injections.

The Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission went against some of its members and geologists after approving the Encana Oil and Gas injection well in March, noted the article.

The EPA also wants to know that the water won’t be used for drinking water.

Encana claimed that the aquifer is way too expensive to treat and transport as drinking water and says they will provide whatever information it can to clarify its plans, stated the article.

"We are looking forward to reviewing their comments and meeting with the EPA very soon," said Paul Ulrich, company project manager. "We’re very confident with our application."
