Ultrafiltration bringing safe drinking water to rural China

SHENZHEN, China — A recent installation of ultrafiltration membranes brought safe drinking water to 2,000 rural students.

SHENZHEN, China — As part of government campaigns to promote rural drinking water safety, ultrafiltration membranes have been installed to clean groundwater in Siyuan School on Hainan Island, China's southernmost province, according to an article by CRIENGLISH.com.

The membrane installation has benefited more than 2,000 students and staff at the school, allowing them to drink tap water and avoid bringing boiled water from home as they have done for years, the article noted.

Fifty schools and 155 villages in Chenmai County, a total of 315,000 residents or 90 percent of the country's rural populace, will soon have drinking water due to ultrafiltration membrane installations, the article reported.

"These filters allow us to set up water treatment works on a small scale with low installation and operating costs," said Li Guibai of the Chinese Academy of Engineering of the membranes produced by Litree Purifying Technology Co.

According to the article, China has allocated 180 billion yuan for construction of rural drinking water projects from 2005 to 2012 and a new regulation from the National Development and Reform Commission encourages coordination between central government and local authorities on drinking water issues.
