NGWA highlights NGWREF Darcy Lecturers for Women’s History Month

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — The NGWA thanked these women, who have made contributions to the field of hydrogeology since the mid-1980s.

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — In honor of Women's History Month, the National Groundwater Association (NGWA) has highlighted women who have made contributions to the field of hydrogeology by serving as National Ground Water Research and Educational Foundation (NGWREF) Darcy Lecturers since the lecture series’ inception in the mid-1980s, according to a press release.

During the 1990s, continued the release, Mary Jo Baedecker, Ph.D., presented “The Fate of Organic Compounds and Geochemical Processes in Contaminated Aquifers” in 1993; Linda Abriola, Ph.D., presented “Organic Liquid Contaminant Entrapment and Persistence in the Subsurface: Interphase Mass Transfer Limitations and Implications for Remediation” in 1996; and Barbara Sherwood-Lollar, Ph.D., presented “Stable Carbon Isotopes: Tools for Direction of the Origin and Fate of the Environmental Contaminants” in 1998.

Since that time, the release reported, Mary C. Hill, Ph.D., presented “Guidelines for Effective Model Calibration (Any Model!)” in 2001; Richelle Allen-King, Ph.D., presented both “A Hydrogeochemist's Perspective on Organic Contaminant Transport in Ground Water” and “Ground and Surface Water Contributions to Chemical Mass Discharge: Considering the Problem at Field and Basin Scales” in 2003; and Eileen Poeter, Ph.D., presented “All Models Are Wrong: How Do We Know Which Are Useful?” in 2006.

This year, Dorthe Wildenschild, Ph.D., will present both “What Happens in the Pore, No Longer Stays in the Pore: Opportunities and Limitations for Porous Media Characterization and Process Quantification Using X-ray Tomography” and “Optimizing Capillary Trapping as a Carbon Dioxide Mitigation Strategy: Pore-Scale Findings in Support of Larger-Scale Implementation."

NGWA thanks these — and all — women who have worked so hard to help to advance the groundwater industry, noted the release.
