PHILADELPHIA — In a settlement with EPA, Stone Energy Corporation will pay a civil penalty of $177,500 and restore streams damaged by the company’s alleged unauthorized discharge of dredged or fill material in Wetzel County, West Virginia, according to a press release.
The alleged Clean Water Act violations occurred during the construction of two Marcellus Shale well pads and access roads, stated the release.
Stone Energy Corporation allegedly filled in around 680 feet of tributaries to Fishing Creek at the Weekley Well Pad and 420 feet of Duerrs Run, in addition to an associated tributary at the Maury Well Pad, without first obtaining the required permit, reported the release.
The release continued that the violation was a result of the company’s failure to apply for and receive a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers before the dredged or fill material was discharged into the waterways.
Stone Energy Corporation has agreed to conduct a combination of stream mitigation and restoration of the affected streams, noted the release.
