WASHINGTON — EPA announced that an extensive coalition of 27 nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) including The Sierra Club, The Conservation Fund and The Nature Conservancy has pledged to support the Urban Waters Federal Partnership as it works to restore waterways and revitalize communities across the U.S., according to a press release.
The NGOs will align expertise, resources and funding with federal efforts to help engage residents and youth, increase outdoor recreation and restore urban waters and parks, stated the release.
The release reported that the announcement of this broad alliance came after federal agencies and NGOs convened recently in Washington, D.C. to share best practices for restoring urban waterways.
For years, several urban waterways have been polluted by runoff from city streets, sewage and contamination from abandoned industrial facilities, noted the release.
“We are very grateful for the support and partnership that these important organizations will be bringing to our efforts to restore urban waterways,” said EPA Deputy Assistant Administrator for Water Ken Kopocis. “Community-led revitalization is central to the success of the Urban Waters Federal Partnership and these organizations have deep roots in the cities across the country, which will enhance and accelerate our collective work.”
