American Water and LG Sonic receive EBJ’s Business Achievement Award

ZOETERMEER, Netherlands — American Water and LG Sonic received the Environmental Business Journal (EBJ) award for the installation of four solar-powered algae control buoys in a drinking reservoir at the Canoe Brook Water Treatment Plant in Short Hills, New Jersey.

ZOETERMEER, Netherlands — The Environmental Business Journal (EBJ) recognized American Water and LG Sonic with the Business Achievement Award, according to a press release.

American Water and LG Sonic received the award for the installation of four solar-powered algae control buoys (MPC-Buoys) in a drinking reservoir at the Canoe Brook Water Treatment Plant in Short Hills, New Jersey, stated the release.

When blooming in lakes and water reservoirs, reported the release, blue-green algae can cause health issues, fish kills and odor problems.

LG Sonic developed the MPC-Buoy, a floating, solar-powered platform that “emits specific ultrasonic parameters to target the algae present,” in order to provide an eco-friendly solution to the algae problems,  and in 2014 American Water installed the buoys in the drinking water reservoir, continued the release.

“Extensive testing conducted during 2014 showed that the installed buoys had a significant impact on the algae, allowing the treatment plant to reduce chemical consumption by more than 20 percent and reducing the concentration of compounds that can cause undesirable tastes and odors,” added the release.

The Business Achievement Award was presented during a special award ceremony on March 11 at the Environmental Industry Summit in San Diego, California, noted the release.
