USGS, EPA and Blue Legacy International announce the ‘Visualizing Nutrients Challenge’

RESTON, Va. — The innovation competition focuses on inventive ways to analyze and organize existing data on nutrient levels in water.

RESTON, Va. — The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Blue Legacy International announced the launch of the contest, “Visualizing Nutrients Challenge,” according to a press release.

The innovation competition with $15,000 in cash prizes focuses on inventive ways to analyze and organize existing data on nutrient levels in water, stated the release.

“Participants will tap open government data sources to create compelling visualizations that inform citizens, communities and resource managers about conditions of nitrogen and phosphorus in [U.S.] waters,” continued the release.

The results of the contest, reported the release, are anticipated to help educate and inspire action to address hypoxia, algal blooms and other nutrient-related water quality issues.

The first place winner will relieve $10,000 and a People’s Choice Award recipient will be awarded $5,000, added the release.

The Visualizing Nutrients Challenge will stay open until 11:59 p.m. on June 8, noted the release.
