NGWREF names 2016 Henry Darcy Distinguished Lecturer

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — The Henry Darcy Distinguished Lecture Series has reached over 85,000 professionals, groundwater students and faculty members since it began in 1986.

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — The National Ground Water Research and Educational Foundation (NGWREF) has selected Ty Ferré, Ph.D., professor in the University of Arizona’s Department of Hydrology and Water Resources, as the 2016 Henry Darcy Distinguished Lecturer, according to a press release.

Ferré’s lecture, “Seeing Things Differently: Rethinking the Relationship between Data and Models,” discusses how the practice of hydrology depends on computer middles while, at the same time, new methods have been developed or adapted for monitoring and characterizing the subsurface, stated the release.

He reports two areas have evolved “almost completely independently of one another, but posits a unified approach is needed — designing measurement methods in the context of numerical analyses that address specific scientific and management question,” continued the release.

Ferré will present an integrated overview of the relationships among measurements, models and decisions, reported the release.

The Henry Darcy Distinguished Lecture Series has reached over 85,000 professionals, groundwater students and faculty members since it began in 1986, added the release.

The lecture series is named in honor of Henry Darcy of France for his 1856 investigations, which “established the physical basis upon which groundwater hydrogeology has been studied ever since,” noted the release.
