RESTON, Va. — The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is joining the global celebration of Earth Day on April 22, according to a press release.
To build environmental awareness, USGS has outlined some of the significant challenges facing the world and various science projects underway to help address these issues, stated the release.
Science provides a valuable foundation for policymakers, managers and other decision-makers to make the most informed decisions to “protect our changing world,” continued the release.
One global challenge highlighted in the release is water availability, and the release reports water is critical for agriculture, energy, industry and human consumption as well as fundamental for ecosystem health, resilience and biodiversity.
The release also notes droughts and floods rank first and second, respectively, as the most costly natural hazards facing the U.S.
