DUKEVILLE, N.C. — Duke Energy will begin delivering bottled water to residences near its coal ash pits in North Carolina, according to an AP news release provided by abcnews.go.com.
Over 150 residential wells tested near Duke’s dumps have failed to meet state groundwater standards, stated the release.
Residents have been advised not to use the water for drinking or cooking, reported the release.
Many of the test results show worrisome levels of toxic heavy metals like hexavalent chromium and vanadium, both of which can be contained in coal ash, added the release.
Duke is scheduled for sentencing on Thursday, May 14, for nine environmental crimes, noted the release.
