CAMBRIDGE, Ontario — The Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA) presented the city of North Battlefield with the 2015 CAMA Environment Award, according to a press release.
The city was recognized for replacing its landfilling practices with a Lystek biosolids management system, noted the release.
“CAMA is pleased to recognize the administrative excellence demonstrated by the City of North Battleford for its efforts to convert biosolids into a commercially usable fertilizer,” said Robert Hughes, president of the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators and chief administrative officer for Stratford, PE, in the release. “North Battleford is a leader in Western Canada when it comes to using this new system.”
The award is bestowed upon a municipality demonstrating commitment to environmentally sustainable governance, protecting the environment and combating climate change, stated the release. Ravenhill Group Inc. sponsored the honor.
North Battlefield began exploring ways to manage its biosolids in November 2007, and the system began operatiing in December 2014, reported the release. Lystek was chosen for affordability and the ability to retrofit an existing plant.
The city is the first in Western Canada to use the system, shared the release.
