USGS water science center hires new director

June 17, 2015

BOISE, Idaho — The new hire will assume a regional approach to water issues.

BOISE, Idaho — Dr. Kyle W. Blasch is the new director of the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Idaho Water Science Center, according to a press release.

Blasch succeeds acting director Greg Clark in his new role, noted the release. Clark will stay on as associate director for scientific investigations.

In his new job Blasch will focus on supporting science-based decision making and learning more about Idaho’s water issues, reported the release. He will also assume a regional approach.

“Idaho faces many of the same challenges as Montana and Wyoming,” said Blasch in the release. “Water crosses state lines, and so do many of the issues around water such as drought and water availability for agriculture and energy production. Successfully addressing these issues requires regional collaboration.”

Before his new position Blasch was assistant director of the USGS Wyoming-Montana Water Science Center, stated the release. He joined USGS as a doctoral candidate at the University of Arizona in 2000. He studied groundwater recharge and modeling as a research hydrologist with the USGS Arizona Water Science Center.

After moving to the USGS Wyoming-Montana Water Science Center in 2008, he led studies on energy-related development, dam removal, water usage, water quality policies and more, shared the release.
