Thames Tideway Tunnel wins Silver Jubilee Cup

LONDON — Sitting 35-65 meters underground, the tunnel is 25 kilometers long and 7.2 meters wide.

LONDON — The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) awarded its Silver Jubilee Cup to the £4.2 billion Thames Tideway Tunnel, according to a press release.

When complete in seven years, the tunnel should prevent 39 million tons of untreated sewage from entering the Thames every year, noted the release. Sitting 35-65 meters underground, the tunnel is 25 kilometers long and 7.2 meters wide.

The honor was given out at the RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence ceremony, stated the release. The sold-out event included more than 450 guests.

“The Thames Tideway Tunnel is an outstanding example of world-class infrastructure being brilliantly delivered with a huge contribution from the planners involved,” said Janet Askew, RTPI president, in the release. “This worthy winner of our award also impressed with a very positive approach to public engagement, and will result in the vital upgrading of London’s sewers that will have an impact that will last for many years to come.”

Phil Stride, head of Thames Tideway Tunnel, shared in the release, "We are thrilled to win this award. It recognizes a very significant infrastructure project which will make a major difference to London. I am fortunate to have a hugely talented team who have worked very hard to secure the planning permissions we needed."
