DENVER — The organization is among the first in the country to receive the honor.

DENVER — The Partnership for Safe Water recently awarded the Directors Award in its Distribution System Optimization Program to Fort Collins Utilities (FCU), according to a press release.

The utility is the first in Colorado and among the first in the country to receive the honor, noted the release.

"I congratulate Fort Collins Utilities for being a leader in water quality and one of the first utilities in North America to achieve this award," said Deputy Director Becki Clark from the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water. "This shows a commitment to safeguarding our water systems and ensuring public health, as well as providing exceptional drinking water to local homes and businesses."

FCU received the award by developing plans to optimize its systems after conducting a comprehensive evaluation of its water distribution operations and performance, stated the release. Industry experts compiled results into a report, which highlighted planned maintenance success, advanced meters, proactive leak detection and staff operations.

"We are honored to be the first utility in Colorado to receive this award," said FCU Executive Director Kevin Gertig in the release. "As a founding member of the Partnership, we are committed to continual improvement and excellence in water quality."

FCU also received the Partnership’s 15-year award for the water treatment facility in the spring, reported the release. The two awards were presented at the American Water Works Association’s annual conference.
