Anglian Water trials Arvia tertiary treatment technology combining oxidation and adsorption

Trials of an advanced tertiary water and wastewater treatment system have proven its effectiveness in removing several trace substances from wastewater final effluent. A laboratory-scale version of Arvia Technology’s Nyex treatment system was initially tested in partnership with Anglian Water at Arvia’s in-house facility. The capabilities proven by Arvia’s Nyex 1-20a resulted in the project being scaled-up, with the construction of a Nyex 7-50a pilot system on the site of a wastewater treatment plant owned and operated by Anglian Water. The on-site trial aimed to assess the system’s performance in treating a sidestream of real effluent containing a range of 60 selected trace substances over a 12-month period in 2016-17. Anglian Water carried out analysis on water samples pre- and post- treatment throughout the demonstration period.

Arvia’s Nyex treatment systems combine adsorption with advanced oxidation in a single, scalable unit. Trace organics are concentrated on the surface of Arvia’s proprietary media, which is nonporous with high electrical conductivity. This patented adsorbent media allows for targeted and continuous oxidation. Nyex media is effectively regenerated in situ and the process can continue without interruption or replacement. Results are achieved without chemical dosing or the generation of sludge, reducing costs in terms of transport of chemicals and specialist waste disposal.

ABB delivers virtual flowmeters powered by Arundo Analytics

Arundo Analytics and ABB collaborated to create the first cloud-based virtual multiphase flowmeters for the offshore oil and gas industry. The cloud-to-cloud solution will provide connectivity between ABB Ability and Arundo’s Composer and Fabric software to offer a more affordable and reliable option for oil and gas operators. The virtual flowmeter provides analytics as a service to help facilities gain real-time data to understand the constituent properties of any given stream of produced fluids. Arundo’s software is purpose-built for taking desktop-based analytical models into live, online environments in minutes.

Hydraulic Institute recognized key contributors in annual awards program

The Hydraulic Institute (HI) 2018 Annual Conference concluded with an awards dinner in March at the Wigwam Resort in Phoenix, Arizona. During the program, HI presented the following awards:

2017 HI Lifetime Achievement Award

Rich Heppe, retired president, Industrial Motors & Systems, Nidec Motor Corporation

Heppe has supported the pump industry as an engineer, marketing leader and president for motor companies over a 45-year career. His organization was one of HI’s first associate members, and he played an important role as both vice chair and chair of the Associate Member Council. In addition to his role on many committees, Heppe has served on the HI Board of Directors three times.

2017 HI Member of the Year

Julian Atchia, Director of Research and Development, SJE Rhombus

Atchia distinguishes himself for the level and extent of his involvement thus advancing the technical work of HI.

Pump Systems Matter Leadership

Jim Swetye, Technical Training Manager, Grundfos USA

As a founding member of PSM, Swetye brings quality pump systems education to a range of pump end users. He was an original committee member of the first Pump Systems Optimization (PSO) in-person training course. In addition, he served as the first chairperson on the Educational Affairs Committee and on the committee for the first PSO Guidebook and now, on developing the next-generation version of this popular guide.

Standards Partner of the Year

Ernest Sturtz, Pump Systems Specialist, CDM Smith – Water Services

Sturtz has been an active participant with the Institute since the late 1990s participating as a peer reviewer for HI standards prior to his company joining as one of the initial Standard Partners. He was also instrumental in working with HI to create the Standards Partner category, which allows engineering consulting firms to assist HI members in developing standards, guidelines and educational programs.
