High school damaged by Hurricane Katrina receives donations, renovates restrooms

FRANKLIN PARK, Ill. — Around 50 percent of Benjamin Franklin High School was damaged by water that stood for 30 days after the hurricane.

FRANKLIN PARK, Ill. — Sloan has donated energy- and water-efficient plumbing products for the restrooms of Benjamin Franklin High School located in New Orleans, according to a press release.

After sustaining damage during Hurricane Katrina, Benjamin Franklin High School, originally built in the 1980s, is still trying to repair various parts of the building, stated the release.

Around 50 percent of the high school was damaged by water that stood for 30 days after the hurricane, continued the release.

One project to help repair some of the damage caused by the hurricane, reported the release, was to renovate the high school’s restrooms adjacent to the auditorium.

"How the renovations to the restrooms adjacent to the auditorium came about was kismet," said Dr. Timothy Rusnak, CEO and principal. “It goes back to last year when the students … participated in the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Louisiana Chapter's Louisiana Green School Challenge — a program that aims to educate the public about the benefits of green building and environmental stewardship by participating in hands-on, experiential projects. Franklin was one of nine winning schools out of 40 who competed in the challenge.”

Benjamin Franklin High School was chosen as the chapter's first Green School Showcase, and the school’s mentor “was instrumental in directing the renovation,” coordinating donations from several manufacturers of green building products, noted the release.
