WARRENDALE, PA, Aug. 20, 2010 -- A major soft drink manufacturer has selected Siemens to provide a total water management solution for a new bottling plant in Malaysia. This multi-million dollar project includes water and wastewater treatment equipment and a two-year operation and maintenance service agreement. The solution from Siemens offers the lowest total cost of ownership while allowing greater operating flexibility, and environmental benefits such as energy, water and chemical savings. The plant is scheduled to be commissioned in November 2010.
The environmentally friendly 150 m³/h process water treatment system uses the concept of the Siemens S3 process (S3: Sanitize/Start/Stop), coupled with a modular reverse osmosis (RO) system. The S3 process reduces the amount of energy and water consumed and wastewater generated, by shutting down the water treatment system during periods of non use. The S3 process also extends membrane life, further reducing operational costs. The Malaysian soft drink plant's estimated annual operational savings by using the S3 process are approximately 20% compared to conventional system use.
The SBR system has a provision to include a nutrient removal process step to meet future stringent wastewater-discharge regulations in Malaysia. The modular system has been designed to increase future biological treatment capacity, if required. The "on-demand" design of the SBR system allows the jet aeration to be used only when needed for the particular batch of wastewater generated, thus significantly reducing operating costs. The system is designed to require very low
maintenance, as the life span of the jet aerator is often greater than 20 years and there are no electromechanical moving parts under water.
