Ithaca wastewater plant becomes 60 percent energy self-sufficient with biogas

ITHACA, N.Y. — The plant hopes to sell the biogas as vehicle fuel in the future.

ITHACA, N.Y. — Due to recent upgrades, the Ithaca Area Wastewater Treatment Facility (IAWWTF) is now able to generate 60 percent of its own energy by producing biogas, according to an article on Ithaca.com.

The facility is working toward becoming more efficient so that it can someday sell biogas for vehicle fuel, the article reported.

In the future, the plant could further purify the biogas so that it has lower carbon dioxide content and can be used in vehicles, noted the article.

IAWWTF uses wastewater, septic waste, grease trap waste, dairy waste and hydrolyzate to harvest carbon, continued the article, using an anaerobic digester.
