WESTERVILLE, Ohio — The National Ground Water Association (NGWA) urges everyone to protect and conserve groundwater.

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — The National Ground Water Association (NGWA) announced National Groundwater Awareness Week will take place March 8-14, according to a press release.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported 99 percent of all available fresh water in the world is groundwater, with rivers, lakes and streams amounting to one percent of the world’s total fresh water, stated the release.

The release reported that 87 million Americans are on community water systems using groundwater, and 44.5 million Americans supply their water through water wells.

NGWA, continued the release, encourages everyone to protect and conserve groundwater.

The release noted that people can conserve groundwater by: Using water-efficient appliances, disposing of hazardous substances at appropriate disposal facilities, using drought-resistant or native plants outdoors and more.

“Life as we know it would quite simply not be possible without groundwater,” said NGWA Public Awareness Director Cliff Treyens. “It provides drinking water to about 132 million Americans, supplies surface fresh water bodies, waters crops and supports ecosystems.”
