New water bond will provide clean drinking water for disadvantaged California communities

SAN FRANCISCO — The $7.5 billion water bond will provide safe drinking water for California communities and supply $1.5 billion for other water supply projects.

SAN FRANCISCO — California legislative leaders, with the support of Gov. Jerry Brown, approved a $7.5 billion water bond providing clean drinking water for disadvantaged communities and granting $1.5 billion for water recycling, water efficiency, stormwater capture and other local water supply projects, according to a press release.

Local water supply projects are similar to those detailed in a report published by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and the Pacific Institute entitled, “The Untapped Potential of California’s Water Supply,” stated the release.

The bond offers significant funding to restore watersheds across the state, including the San Joaquin River, L.A. River and Salton Sea, as well as provides as much as $3.6 billion (nearly half) for groundwater storage and cleanup projects, continued the release.

However, the bond does not provide funding for the Bay Delta Conservation Plan, and will not advance that unsustainable plan for the Delta, noted the release.
