ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigerians may face steep fines if they defecate in open spaces from now on, according to an article by Deutsche Welle.
Nigerian officials are offering toilet education workshops in order to prevent groundwater pollution from human waste, the article reported.
According to Kannan Nadar of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), 100 million Nigerians lack access to toilets and 45 million defecate in the open, noted the article.
Consequences of open defecation include drinking water infected with water-borne diseases such as cholera and high infant mortality rates, according to the article.
