DEXTER, Mich. — An explosion at the wastewater treatment plant in the village of Dexter, Mich. killed one worker and injured another, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Courtney Nicholls, assistant village Manger of the Washtenaw County community, said the men were working on the lid of a large tank that is used to store and breakdown sludge when the explosion occurred, stated the article.

Both men were taken to the hospital where it was confirmed that one had died and the other was in stable condition.

Dexter Area Fire Department Chief Loren Yates said he thinks the men were disassembling part of the tank, which was part of a project to replace the tank’s lid.

“They were cutting some steel out of it. We think they were using torches, and it ignited methane gas,” Yates said.
