MORGANTON, N.C. — A notice delivered by Burke County, N.C. said that over 400,000 gallons of wastewater spilled from the county’s sewer collection system into the Catawba River basin, according to the Hickory Record.

The untreated wastewater was spilled from a manhole outside the Indian Hills Pump Station, noted the article.

The spill lasted for about six and a half hours as heavy rainfall continued to pour down on the area.

The crews were not immediately able to start working on the spill as the roads and sewer lines were under water, stated the article.

Carson Fisher, general services director for Burke County, said that area has been the source of multiple spills in the past on lines that have inflow and infiltration issues related to ground and surface water.
