BEAVER, Pa. — Fifteen residents in western Pennsylvania have sued FirstEnergy Corp. for allegedly allowing chemicals to leach into groundwater from a 1,700-acre impoundment, according to an article by The Republic.
The federal court lawsuit claims that arsenic, sulfates and chlorides were leached into waterways, causing odors, wet yards and shifting foundations, the article reported.
The impoundment, Little Blue Run, is located in West Virginia and serves as the disposal site for FirstEnergy's Bruce Mansfield coal plant, the article noted.
According to the article, the company plans to close Little Blue Run by 2016 per an agreement with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
