MACUNGIE, Pa. — Bear Creek Mountain Resort & Conference Center in Pennsylvania will soon be the third ski area in the state and one of only a handful in the country to use highly treated liquid effluent to make snow, according to an article by The Morning Call.
The ski area received a permit from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to implement the plan before the 2014-15 ski season, the article reported.
According to the article, Bear Creek has invested nearly $800,000 since 1999 building its own wastewater treatment plant and water recycling infrastructure to serve its 116-room hotel.
The reclaimed wastewater will be mixed 1:10 with runoff water and undergo an additional ultraviolet treatment step, the article noted.
The extra equipment and engineering to enact this plan will cost the resort around $70,000, according to the article.
