Podcast: Dais Analytic’s Tim Tangredi on Legionella and cooling towers

Oct. 27, 2015

Technologies have been developed to improve people’s quality of life, but with these innovations also come risks from contaminants like Legionella.

Tim Tangredi, president and CEO of Dais Analytic Corporation, spoke with Associate Editor Robyn Tucker from the Vatican to discuss Legionella and why it is so prevalent, especially in the developed world.

Technologies such as air conditioning systems have been developed to improve people’s quality of life, but with these innovations also come risks from contaminants like Legionella, which can live in cooling towers. They can transmit to humans through particles in their air, possibly causing serious illness or, in some cases, death.

Tangredi explores why Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks have increased recently. He believes the problem is largely a maintenance issue. Professionals can look into the proper materials for wet and dry systems to determine the best fit for their needs.

"Because we are creative people, we have the ability to do things when we see a problem, we’ve developed something that allows us to take a giant leap forward," says Tangredi. "A lot of times — new technology, when it comes to an industry like HVAC or certain industrial processes — people’s minds are closed." Tangredi encourages professionals to open their thinking and explore new technologies seriously to help find solutions as the industry continues to innovate.
