Disinfection

The Accu-Tab® System from PPG Industries is a safe, effective, convenient and controllable alternative to chlorine gas, bleach and other sanitizers used in cooling tower operations. The advantages of the system include inexpensive installation (nearly all are gravity drain), negligible maintenance time and costs. The very controllable and stable chemical provides residual protection that is often required in many treatment applications. It is easily adaptable to automated control. The Accu-Tab tablets have NSF 60 and AWWA B-300 listings and the chlorinators are NSF 61 listed. The tablets are solid calcium hypochlorite so dangerous chlorine releases are non-existent -and process safety management and risk management program compliance worries disappear.

Zero-emission cleaning

Valve and Filter's VAF Zeffer is a self-contained, skid-mounted cooling tower filter system with its own pump, motor controller, pump suction strainer, centrifugal filter, bag filter and DP gage/switch. All piping, valves and electrical wiring is included. Installation requires only inlet and outlet piping to the skid, and a starter with voltage. There is no flush water since the bag filter's discharge is piped back to the pump suction. This "side stream" filter diverts 5% to 20% of the total cooling flow through the filter system and properly sized, filters all the water in the cooling system at least six times daily. Concentrated dirt is removed from the centrifugal filter and sent to the bag filter, which requires only periodic changing. This zero-emission, fine filtration equipment keeps cooling towers clean without wasting flush water like other filters and automatic strainer filters.

Fugitive emissions monitoring

Process leaks into heat exchange cooling water produce fugitive hydrocarbon emissions that can be emitted to the atmosphere as the water circulates to the cooling tower. FCI Environmental introduced its PetroSense® CMS-4000 Continuous Monitoring System that provides real-time monitoring of hydrocarbons from process leaks into cooling tower water. The system utilizes patented Fiber Optic Chemical Sensor (FOCS®) technology. Offering a wide dynamic range and detection limits to below one ppm, the CMS-4000 continuously monitors for a range of hydrocarbons including Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH), chlorinated hydrocarbons such as TCE and more.

Packaged ozone systems

A packaged ozone system for cooling tower treatment includes the patented GDT™ process for gas to liquid mass transfer, is modular and can support small and large scale cooling tower treatment applications. The system employs high efficiency Mazzei® injectors to aspirate ozone gas from a generator at one to 15% weight providing dynamic mixing and mass transfer.

Mechanical corrosion/scaling control

The VRTX mechanical system from A.W. Chesterton is designed to control corrosion and scaling. The water to be treated is pumped directly from the holding basin. The total cooling water capacity can be passed in a side stream through the system. Nothing is added to the water and no toxic materials or gases are released. The system contains a vacuum lens inside the chamber that strips out carbon dioxide and other dissolved gases, thereby accelerating the formation of non-sticking calcium carbonate. This combined with the high shear forces generated in the chamber, alters the chemical state of dissolved calcium forming calcium carbonate. The system breaks the tetrahedral bonds and disrupts the equilibrium of soluble calcium bicarbonate, Ca(HCO3)2, and insoluble calcium carbonate, CaCO3, and releases carbon dioxide.

Treatment controller

Osmonics introduces the newly enhanced Lakewood Instruments™ Model 1575e Water Treatment Controller. It can be used in multiple applications including cooling water, chill loop, condensate and boiler applications. This controller can be switched between applications simply by changing the conductivity sensor selection. The unit's built-in features include: 1) indicator lights on the face of the controllers for Power, Alarm, and Relay Status; 2) UL/CSA approval; 3) feed and bleed with chemical feed time out option as a menu selection; 4) ranging for conductivity calibration ranges for easier set up; and 5) remote conductivity input via the 4-20 mA option. No add-on options are required. Osmonics also manufactures water purification and fluid filtration, fluid separation and fluid handling equipment, and replaceable components.

UV disinfection

Trojan Technologies designs and installs large ultraviolet (UV) systems to treat cooling water. For the nuclear power plant at Civaux, France, the company installed its System UV3000Plus™, which treats 22.8 mgd of cooling water. The unit destroys source water microorganisms, which otherwise would multiply rapidly in the warm environment of the cooling water circuit and pose health risks if discharged to a receiving water body.

Cooling tower controller

ProMinent introduces the Dulcometer® Cool-Control cooling tower controller. This latest technology introduces a compact system that controls and monitors conditions such as blowdown, biocide and inhibitor control. Conductivity feedback to the controller is processed and activates two biocide pumps, one inhibitor pump, a chart recorder, fault alarm and blowdown valve. Both wall-mount and panel-mount models are available.

Mixed oxidant disinfection

Miox on-site mixed oxidant generators provide cooling water disinfection that eliminates biocide use while preventing biofilm buildup and algae growth. Lack of biofilm prevents protected breeding areas for hazardous bacteria like Legionella. The durable chlorine residual guarantees that algae and biofilm will not regenerate. Equipment capacity ranges from 2.5 to 400 pounds per day of free available chlorine.
