MANCHESTER, Conn. — Residents should not be alarmed as the odor is only temporary while upgrades are ongoing.

MANCHESTER, Conn. — Work being done to upgrade the Hockanum River Water Pollution Control facility is causing terrible odors to spread to local residents, according to the Journal Inquirer.

However, residents should not be alarmed as the odor is only temporary while upgrades are ongoing.

The $43 million upgrade includes replacing buildings, equipment and other items in its wastewater and sewage handling process that were initially installed in the 1950s, noted the article.

The project is expected to allow the facility to remove nitrogen and phosphorus from the wastewater in order to reduce the impact of nutrients on the environment.

Other improvements include new solids handling equipment, an odor-control system and building repairs, stated the article.
