San Antonio Water System selects consulting firm as design consultant

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Water System (SAWS) serves more than 1.8 million residents within the corporate limits of the San Antonio and Bexar County.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Water System (SAWS) has chosen Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam Inc. (LAN), a full-service consulting firm offering planning, engineering and program management services, as a design consultant to enhance its water distribution and sanitary sewer collection system, according to a press release.

Serving more than 1.8 million residents, SAWS is the largest municipally-owned water and wastewater utility located in the San Antonio/Bexar County area, and has recently integrated with the BexarMet Water System, resulting in the need of rehabilitation, replacement or reconstruction of numerous segments of water mains to meet SAWS standards, stated the release.

SAWS is also upgrading its sewer infrastructure to comply with the consent decree settlement agreement approved in June 2013 with the EPA, continued the release.

“We are looking forward to working with SAWS to improve its water infrastructure and reduce the number of sanitary sewer overflows,” said Jeremy Doege, P.E., LAN’s associate and team leader. “The improvements also will ensure residents at the far reaches of the system have adequate water pressure and sufficient fire protection, while eliminating segments of pipe that are old, leaking and wasting water.”
