Six organizations commit to address water and sanitation needs for cities worldwide

MARSEILLE, France — Over half of the world’s population now live in cities, according to the United Nations World Health Organization, causing the delivery of safe water and sanitation in cities to be a significant component to securing future environmental, human and economical sustainability.

MARSEILLE, France — Through a partnership agreement, six organizations committed to work together to address the important role local and regional authorities and operators plan in providing and managing water and sanitation for populations, while safeguarding water resources, and to support cities in rising to this challenge, according to a press release.

The six organizations include: ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, UN-Habitat’s Global Water Operators’ Partnership Alliance, the Daegu Gyeongbuk Development Institute, United Cities and Local Government, the World Water Council and the Seventh World Water Forum’s National Committee, stated the release.

The release reported that the agreement will function as a significant component for the preparation and organization of the Local and Regional Authorities Conference of the Seven World Water Forum, taking place in Daegu-Gyeongbuk, Republic of Korea, on April 12-17, 2015, as well as at the Habitat III conference on housing and sustainable urban development in 2016.

The partnership objectives include: To support cities worldwide in commitments to facilitate access to basic services, to propose a roadmap for local and regional authorities to reach qualitative and quantitative objectives for water and sanitation with the Istanbul Water Consensus and to promote the definition and the implementation of local water policies, noted the release.
