South Africa province begins water restrictions

June 29, 2015

PRETORIA, South Africa — Drinking water production has decreased from 40 to 28 liters per day.

PRETORIA, South Africa — Several municipalities in the KwaZulu-Natal province have new water restrictions in place because of critically low dam levels, according to Allafrica.com.

The iLembe District and eThekwini Metro are impacted most by the rationing measures, noted the article.

"Water rationing is a level 4 water restriction measure — the highest,” stated the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. “It has commenced at 30 percent restriction and depending on the dam levels, it will be incrementally moved to 50 percent restriction.

"Umgeni Water, which is the bulk supplier for iLembe and eThekwini, is implementing a 30 percent reduction in potable water production at its Hazelmere Waterworks," the department said in the article.

Umgeni Water production has decreased to 28 million liters of drinking water per day, reported the article. It produced 40 million liters day before the onset of the drought.

"We need to save every drop because as of now every drop of water counts,” Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube shared in the article. “The effects of climate change are with us, as evidenced by the below average rainfall received during the summer season which has left a number of dams almost dry."

Dube added in the article that all residents and businesses should do their part to conserve and reuse water.
