Texans to vote on State Water Fund for Texas

Oct. 23, 2013

AUSTIN, Texas — The fund was proposed in the face of a growing population, declining groundwater supplies and frequent droughts in Texas.

AUSTIN, Texas  — On election day this November, Texans will vote on Proposition 6, which proposes a constitutional amendment establishing a State Water Fund for Texas (SWIFT), according to an article from GWI Desalination.

The amendment would move $2 billion from Texas's Economic Stabilization Fund, known as their "Rainy Day Fund", to the SWIFT, the article reported.

A growing population, declining groundwater supplies and frequent droughts have prompted this solution, noted the article.

According to the article, money from the fund will be used for rural political subdivisions and agricultural water conservation, water conservation and reuse and low-interest loans for organizations developing and managing water supplies.

"We can't conserve our way out of this situation," said Texas representative Lyle Larson. "We simply need a more diversified water supply and more iron on the ground to generate electricity."
