Thieves in Colorado targeting devices preventing tap water from being contaminated

AURORA, Colo. — Over 120 thefts of this type have been reported in Aurora since May 1.

AURORA, Colo. — Homes and businesses in Aurora, Colo. are being targeted by thieves looking to steal devices that prevent tap water from being contaminated, according to NBC Channel 9 News.

Many homes and businesses in the area come equipped with backflow preventers in their sprinkler system to keep out fertilizer and pet waste.

Jeff Gaddis with Aurora Water said the theft of these devices creates a health hazard, noted the article.

"We don't want to get these contaminants that can potentially cause harm into our drinking water," Gaddis said.

Over 120 thefts of this type have been reported in Aurora since May 1 and they’ve gotten as many as seven reports a day, stated the article.

These devices can cost as much as $2,400 and are being sold to scrap metal yards by thieves for about $100.
