TOPEKA, Kan. — Two water suppliers in the Topeka area have found high levels of Haloacetic acid (HAA) levels in the water, according to an article from wibw.com.

The HAAs were found at the Shawnee County Rural Water District 3 and the Metro Topeka Airport Authority at Forbes Field, both of which get their water from the City of Topeka, the article reported.
The levels of HAAs found violate regulations put in place by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); HAAs are byproducts of using chlorine to treat and filter water and have been linked to increased cancer risk, noted the article.
Affected customers will be notified while officials consider disinfection options other than chlorine, such as ozone, the article continued.

The Topeka city water is still in compliance under previous testing requirements where they were authorized to average results on all test sites, but new requirements could put the city water outside the compliance limits, according to the article.
