KANPUR, Uttar Pradesh, India — Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) issued a report warning that pollution levels in the river Ganges have reached “alarming levels” around Kanpur, the largest city in Uttar Pradesh, according to a press release.

The report reveals that dissolved oxygen (DO) levels have reduced to levels threatening aquatic life in the river around the city, stated the release.

The release reported that samples from Ganges River were taken at points where it enters Kanpur, at the city's center and where the river exits the urban area.

The readings from September showed pH values downstream of 10.32 against a standard of 8.5 as well as biological oxygen demand (BOD) levels double the legislative limit, continued the release.

October readings revealed reduced pH values after heavy rains, however DO and BOD levels were still above the set limits, noted the release.
