MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Officials from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District said constant rainfall the past week has led to estimated 594 million gallons of untreated wastewater to be spilled into local waterways, according to the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel.
The rainwater overwhelmed regional sewers and the deep tunnel, combined sanitary and storm sewers, noted the article.
Most of the overflow was directed into rivers and Lake Michigan starting on April 10 to avoid sewage backups into basements.
Peter Topczewski, the district's director of water quality protection, said with more bad weather in the forecast the threat of tunnel-filling storms and overflows will return.
The combined sewer overflows in central Milwaukee and eastern Shorewood were the first in nearly two years, stated the article.
