FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A failed sewer pipe in Fort Wayne, Ind. created a sinkhole 20 feet deep in a local neighborhood, according to the Journal Gazette.
City crews quickly responded to the problem working to fix the pipes that were installed in the 1930s, noted the article.
Public Works spokesman Frank Suarez said the 24-inch pipe failed leading to rushing wastewater eating away at the soil until a hole 10 feet across and 20 feet deep was created.
Most of the city’s core sewer pipes were made of clay between 75 and 99 years ago, stated the article.
The sinkhole is near a levee built to protect the neighborhood from flooding, and a gas line is not far from the hole either.
